PARIS

So Paris was the first city we visited in this trip. Gonna write about places that we have been to and food that we have tried. Be prepared to be bombarded by almost 20 takes of selfies with the Eiffel tower though.. #sorrynotsorry

The metro ride to our airbnb accommodation in city centre from airport was uneventful until we reached the Drancy Stop where we were asked to leave the train, in french. Later we found out from a few helpful french people that all trains would not move for at least another 2 hours. Meaning, we were stranded in this stop unless we use bus. I am still not sure what really happened on that day.

It was unbelievably hot on that day due to the intense heatwave. From a 12- degree Irish summer to 40-degree Europe summer, it was a huge difference for me. Despite the scorching heat, the public transport in Paris (in fact, in most of the european cities i have visited) has no air conditioning! Which makes me think that we asians are really pampered somehow :\

I can safely say that it was the hottest day in my life.

   Canal Saint Martin

Look at the number of people drinking next to it!

    L'As du Fallafel

Walked for about 2 hours to look for this Famous L' As Du Fallafel place for dinner but we ended up very disappointed. It is overrated, i did not even finish mine.

    Place de la Republique

Take a look at the graffiti! At least i thought those were just vandalism when we were there.  While trying to search online the name of this monument, i read that they are actually tributes to the Charlie Hebdo victims.

     Random streets in Paris

 The beautiful balconies in Paris.

   The Louvre

The family portrait pose 1.0

I have to admit that i never get the spellings correct. lourve?louvre?
We wanted to visit Mona Lisa at first but we gave up when we saw the queue..plus..we are both not people who understand/appreciate art.....we did not even make an effort to find out what is the ticket price. I know Mona Lisa is famous but if you ask me why is it famous i have no clue...because she has no eyebrows? Don't slap me..i am just being honest.

I regret so much of not even peeking through the pyramids to see the Museum. What was i thinking?! Alright...was too focus on taking pictures. Sigh. Wanted to go back after watching the Davinci code. Am i too late?

   L'Escargot Montogueil

It was just average..again..remind yourself not to follow websites lists when it comes to food..the restaurant is full of tourists.

   La Madeleine

I am not 100% sure if this is La Madeleine..i thought it looks like the pantheon...I just randomly took this on the way to Champs-Élysées..But dang, it looks gorgeous inside from googleimage.

   Arc de Triomphe

Have to fight for this spot to get a picture with this Arch.

   Laduree

   Eiffel Tower

Family pose portrait 2.0....

I know...i don't know what is this..

He said he looks like the hunchback in Notredame in this photo.

We spent half day walking around the Eiffel Tower. At night, there were so many people sitting with their picnic blankets on the grass. The environment is just so beautiful. We just sat there for hours, looking at the Eiffel tower with sandwiches we bought at the food stall near the bridge. YUM! And Don't miss the flashing show at 11.00pm!

Wanted to crop the couple out but i find it kinda amusing that they were wearing shirts of the same color like us!..like a mirror.

   Notre Dame

We had like less than five minutes here before we rushed for our bus ride. During that five minutes, we happened to hear the church bells ringing in noon! The gargoyles are so cool...speaking of which..i haven't finished watching the hunchback of notre dame..i fell asleep during the movie in our airbnb apartment.

I can't believe i don't have a picture of Pain aux raisins! It was my favourite food in Paris! okay..we haven't tried foie gras and duck dishes......
It is so delicious that i bought each whenever i passed by a bakery. YOU HAVE TO TRY!

Also, we read online that Bordier Butter is another must try when you are in Paris. We walked all the way to the shop to get it only to find out it is tasteless? I just can't eat any butter after falling in love with IRISH CREAMERY BUTTER. They are the best of the best, sorry france...

This was my first time to a country where i don't speak the language. I only know merci.  There were a few funny occasions..
We wanted to buy shampoo but we ended up buying hair conditioner because we missed the word apres. I also remember going to a crepe shop wanting to order a crepe but i can't read the menu at all. It was all in french and the person doesn't speak english. So i randomly chose poulet and it was sooooooo so good.

In summary, PARIS is freaking BIGGGG! We had to use old school free maps while exploring instead of googlemaps because we had limited data with our sim card! We got ours from prepaid zero. It's just too expensive in my opinion...29 €  for 250MB.

3 Weeks Backpacking Europe Route

Where to start?

As a first timer, it took me days in planning this Europe trip. We wanted to go to so many places but we have limited budget and time. If you happen to want to go to these places as well, I hope you would find this post useful. I avoided using the plane for most of my journey because i really much prefer land transport than flying in the air.

Our Itinerary:

Depart from CORK

Day 1-3     : PARIS- 3 days
Day 4-5     : PRAGUE - 2 days
Day 6-8     : BUDAPEST - 3 days
Day 9-10   : VENICE - 1 day
Day 11-12 : BOLOGNA - 2 days
Day 12-13 : ROME - 2 days
Day 14-16 : NAPLES - 3 days
Day 17      : CAGLIARI - 1 day
Day 18-19 : ARBATAX - 2 days
Day 20-22 : ALGHERO - 2 days

Arrive in DUBLIN

Unfortunately, we did not manage to finish the original route as planned. By the end of Week 2, we were just so exhausted that we bought another pair of tickets to go back to Dublin.

Getting to and from each city:

CORK - PARIS: Aerlingus

59 € / person

PARIS - PRAGUE: Student Agency Bus

68 € / person - 16:00 - 06:30

Paris    - Rue du Faubourg st. Martin, near subway station Château Landon
Prague - ÚAN Florenc

I LOVE this bus. It saves us from booking one night of accommodation. There are movies for you to watch and free drinks! Who doesn't like a cup of hot chocolate before sleep?!

I booked it from: http://czech-transport.com

You can get more information about the bus in: http://www.studentagencybus.com

Right outside the metro station of Château Landon, the bus stop was removed when we went there in July, so don't fret if you can't find it!

PRAGUE - BUDAPEST: Czech Railways (ČD)

24 € / person - 23:50 - 08:35

Prague     - Prague Railway Station (hlavní nádraží)
Budapest  - Keleti Railway Station

The legroom is very limited. I could not rest throughout the ride. Also, you can't recline the seat, which makes it even more uncomfortable.

I got my tickets from:  http://www.cd.cz

BUDAPEST - VENICE: Eurolines Volanbusz

53 € / person - 20:30 - 06:15

Budapest - Volanbusz Nepliget Autostazione
Venice     - Tronchetto stazione people mover

Once you arrived the bus station, go to the counter to check in and get your boarding card!

I got my ticket from: www.sena.it

VENICE - BOLOGNA: Trenitalia

19 € / person - 18:25 - 19:50

Venice    - Santa Lucia
Bologna - Bologna Centrale

BOLOGNA - ROMA: Trenitalia

19 € / person - 07:40 - 09:40

Bologna - Bologna Centrale
Rome    - Roma Termini

ROME - NAPLES: Trenitalia

9 € / person - 06:26 - 08:29

Rome  - Roma Termini
Naples - Napoli Centrale

Pretty straightforward. Trains are new and comfortable. You will have to buy the tickets months earlier to get the cheaper deals. As you can see, tickets can cost as cheap as 9  to 38   per person.

All tickets can be purchased from: http://www.trenitalia.com

NAPOLI - CAGLIARI: Tirrenia Ferry

55 € / person - 19:00 - 08:30

As i have told you, we went back to Ireland at the end of Week 12. I did not get the chance to ride the ferry, which i was quite excited about. We even bought the motion sickness pills before leaving Ireland.
However I can tell you that i managed to get a 50 percent refund from the company! I canceled it just 1 day before the travel date. How lucky!

I got my ferry tickets from: www.aferry.co.uk

CAGLIARI - DUBLIN: Ryanair

100 € / person

Sadly, we skipped Naples and Sardinia Island. I wanted to go to Positano and Sardinia beaches so badly but we just couldn't travel anymore. Regret so much of putting the places that i want to go the most at the end of the trip. Apologise for not able to give you information about the transport in Sardinia.

PS, I booked all my tickets two months before the travel date.
